KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 26 — Bersatu Youth chief Hilman Idham has suggested that his party could back Pakatan Harapan in the Selangor government until the end of its current term.

The Gombak Setia assemblyman was responding to the recent move by two Bersatu representatives in Pahang who pledged support for Barisan Nasional Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail.

Asked whether a similar political arrangement could take shape in Selangor, Hilman said it was “not impossible”, Malaysiakini reported.

“Bersatu has worked with all political parties before, including BN and Harapan. The fundamental consideration is the people’s interests,” he said.

His remarks arrive amid mounting talk of potential realignments in Selangor ahead of the next state election.

Earlier this month, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said that PH remained open to working with any party, including Bersatu and Perikatan Nasional, provided it ensures political stability and benefits the public.

Amirudin noted, however, that no formal or serious discussions had taken place between PH and Bersatu in the state.

Former Selangor MB and current Hulu Kelang assemblyman Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, who heads Selangor PN, currently leads Bersatu in the state assembly.

Azmin is a former PKR leader who left the party as part of the so-called Sheraton Move, with Hilman following suit shortly after.

Speculation over cross-party cooperation has gathered pace following recent developments in Pahang, where Bersatu’s sole two assemblymen, Jasri Jamaludin (Kuala Sentul) and Yazid Yunus (Lepar), crossed the aisle to back Wan Rosdy.

In Melaka, Bersatu has also expressed readiness to explore talks with parties sharing common ground, including PH, as it assesses potential electoral arrangements.

Hilman suggested that the political thaw in Pahang could pave the way for similar pacts elsewhere.

“Politically, Harapan may not need Bersatu. But if it happens, perhaps a convergence of ideas and thinking could strengthen programmes and initiatives for the people of Selangor,” he said.

PH controls 32 of the 56 seats in the Selangor legislative assembly, while BN holds two.

Bersatu occupies 11 seats and PAS holds 10, with former Bersatu representative Abdul Rashid Asari sitting as an independent aligned with Amirudin’s administration.
