KANGAR, Dec 25 — Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli today tendered his resignation as the menteri besar of Perlis due to health factors.

At a press conference held at the menteri besar’s official residence here, Mohd Shukri said he had presented his resignation letter to the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, this afternoon.

In relation to this, he said that the resignation would take effect upon receiving the consent of Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin.

“I hereby leave it entirely to the wisdom of His Royal Highness Tuanku to consider my decision,” he said.

The Sanglang assemblyman also expressed his deepest gratitude to all state government administrative staff and the people of the state for the excellent cooperation provided throughout his administration as menteri besar.

Mohd Shukri also expressed his deepest appreciation to the Raja of Perlis, the Raja Perempuan of Perlis Tuanku Tengku Fauziah Tengku Abdul Rashid, the Raja Muda of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail and the Raja Puan Muda of Perlis Tuanku Dr Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil for giving him the opportunity to serve as Menteri Besar and administer the state government over the past three years.

He also conveyed his gratitude to the party’s top leadership and members for the trust placed in him to carry out his duties as Menteri Besar.

“I would like to seek forgiveness for any shortcomings and mistakes throughout the period I carried this heavy responsibility,” he said.

On December 22, it was reported that Mohd Shukri received treatment at a hospital in the federal capital after experiencing chest pain upon returning from an overseas trip.

The Perlis Menteri Besar’s Office later said he was rushed to hospital for further examination after complaining of chest pain.

Meanwhile, it was also reported that several Perikatan Nasional (PN) state assemblymen in Perlis had allegedly met the Raja of Perlis to express a loss of confidence and withdraw support for Mohd Shukri.

Following this,  PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang issued a statement stating that the party had terminated the membership of its Perlis assemblymen Saad Seman (Chuping), Fakhrul Anwar Ismail (Bintong) and Mohd Ridzuan Hashim (Guar Sanji),  with immediate effect, in accordance with Clause 76 and Clause 15A(1)(b) of the PAS Constitution (Amendment 2025).

Subsequently, Perlis speaker Rus’sele Eizan announced unexpected vacancies for the Chuping, Bintong and Guar Sanji seats following the immediate termination of the three PAS assemblymen’s membership.

Rus’sele said the unexpected vacancies fulfilled the requirements of Clause (1)(a)(ii) of Article 50A of the Perlis Constitution for the three affected constituencies.

In the 15th General Election (GE15), Perikatan Nasional (PN) won 14 of the 15 state seats, consisting of nine by PAS and five by Bersatu, while the remaining seat was won by PKR. — Bernama
