Four men plead guilty to injuring cop after 'mat rempit' assault during wee hours of Raya in Kulai

PONTIAN, April 27 — Four men, including two brothers, pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court here today on charges of committing criminal force and causing injury to a policeman on the morning of Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Mohamad Haikal Abdul Karim, 23, Khalid Khamis, 38, Mohamed Effendi Mohamed Said, 40 and his brother Muhammad Fazli Mohamad Said, 24, were charged together with using violence against Lance Corporal Muhammad Hasrull Mohd Namiri with the intention of preventing him from carrying out his duties.

The offences were allegedly committed at Kilometre (KM) 7, Jalan Kulai towards Kota Tinggi near Kulai at about 3am last Saturday.

Under Section 353 of the Penal Code, they were charged with using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging their duties, which provides for a two-year prison sentence or a fine or both if convicted.

Meanwhile, Mohamad Haikal was charged with intentionally causing injury to Muhammad Hasrull by using his feet and hands in the same location.

The offence is charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, which can be punished with a maximum of one year in prison or a maximum fine of RM2,000 or both, if convicted.

The prosecution was represented by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurezzati Zaini, while the four accused were unrepresented.

Magistrate Nur Azzuin Abdul Moati allowed Mohamad Haikal bail at RM1,500 with one surety while Khalid, Mohamed Efendi and Muhammad Fazli were each allowed bail at RM2,000 each with one surety.

The court set April 30 for sentencing at the Kulai Magistrate's Court.

Yesterday, police issued a statement that a policeman was assaulted by a group of "mat rempit" youths while being part of the Op Selamat festive season anti-crime operation at Kilometre 7 of Jalan Kulai-Kota Tinggi.

Kulai police chief Superintendent Tok Beng Yeow said a police report was lodged by the victim at 3.04pm on the day of the incident before the arrests were made.
