ALOR SETAR, Aug 18 — The simple words of a nurse about the opportunity to save a life through organ donation opened the heart of a school administrative assistant, Norasmani Ahmad, 44, to make a decision that had never crossed her mind.

Norasmani, the wife of the late Mohd Khairil Jamaludin, 44, said initially she was reluctant to allow her husband’s organs to be donated after his death.

“At first, I did not want to donate my husband’s organs. But a nurse named Kak Ros told me, not everyone is chosen by God to be in such a situation.

“The nurse, who took care of my husband while he was receiving treatment at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB), told me that although declared brain dead, Khairil could help others continue to live. That sentence was very profound and impactful,” she said when met by reporters here yesterday.

Norasmani said those words made her consider the decision to donate her husband’s organs, but not before she, their son, and family members had sought further explanations from the hospital and an imam regarding the matter.

She said these explanations helped dispel the family’s perceptions about organ donation, including concerns that the donor’s body will not be disfigured after the organ removal.

“When the ustaz explained the laws and fatwa regarding organ donation, I got a clearer picture and was relieved. My son agreed to it as well,” said Norasmani.

She also remembered her husband’s words of wanting to help other people even though he did not have the financial means to do so.

She said the decision to donate her husband’s organs was made on Aug 12, while the organ retrieval process was carried out on Aug 13, which coincided with World Organ Donation Day.
