PARIS, Feb 6 — Pyjamas at the ready! This homewear essential, once reserved for strolling around your home sweet home — oh and, occasionally, for sleeping too, has recently been transformed into an ultra-stylish fashion item.

It’s an unexpected trend that involves the use of finer materials and brings together elegance and comfort, as well as sophisticated details, for an effortlessly chic look. True slacker splendor.

There is no longer any doubt, the fashion planet has been struck by an acute case of lazy-itis.

After a year spent revamping and overhauling our wardrobes according to the thousands of (micro)trends spotted on TikTok, it’s time for understatement, even minimalism, with a renewed focus on basics.

The famous normcore, which does not require boundless energy, nor an unlimited budget, as there’s no strutting around in elaborate outfits. This nice sweatshirt, paired with well cut jeans, and a pair of sneakers — maybe a pair of mules when you want a bit of a change — will do the trick for a year when lazycore reigns in our wardrobes and when fashion trends have been superseded by our lazy tendencies.

Vincent Grégoire, trends analyst at Nelly Rodi, unpacked this phenomenon for us at the beginning of the year: "This return to normcore is synonymous with laziness.

It’s about not busting a gut, and stopping the constant race for products. It is a kind of laxness. It’s like anti-seduction, and no longer being part of the culture of appearances, of desire.

Some people have not moved on from lockdowns and the pandemic, and are sticking to their sweatpants and slippers. It is no longer a question of neglecting comfort and well-being, and this translates into this look of intellectual sloppiness, even if it is sometimes very carefully considered.”

Pyjamas: A tuxedo in progress

That said, we never expected that this acute case of lazy-itis would be pushed to this extreme, to the point of seeing pyjamas propelled to the rank of a must-have fashion item.

And we’re not talking about a trend for night, but an outfit that now looks set to claim its spot on the street.

A gift for late risers — and anyone who doesn’t want to spend hours examining their closet contents in order to find the perfect outfit to wear to work.

The trend may have a humorous side, but it’s real, as evidenced by the numerous red carpet appearances of major fashion icons in pyjama looks, as well as by the latest collections of pajamas, which are more stylish than ever.

It must be noted that in recent months pyjamas have become a must-have item on social networks.

While celebrities used to pose in eveningwear for the holidays, this time they changed the tone, opting for matching pyjamas for the whole family.

A trend spotted on accounts of the Kardashians — who else? — as well as Jessica Alba, Blake Lively, Victoria Beckham, Mariah Carey, and, of course, on reality TV influencers and their families. In just a few days, pyjamas became a stylish item.

The next step was taking them out the front door and turning them into an everyday outfit.

Something we have witnessed in recent months: homewear and lingerie have taken on a new dimension in women’s wardrobes, now looking more and more like daywear.

Tights and leggings become pants, a kimono or bathrobe becomes a coat, and the bodysuit a mini dress ... Incredible, but true. And Kendall Jenner, at the origin of one of these trends, certainly isn’t going to cast doubt on that. All that remains are pyjamas, in order to complete this chic and comfortable array.

Pyjamas also carved out a place of choice at the last International Lingerie Show, held in late January in Paris, with an emphasis on refined fabrics such as lace, silk, and satin, cuts not unlike those of a suit, interesting prints, and sophisticated details. French brand Aubade even made a genuine ‘nighttime tuxedo,’

From the red carpet to the street

Last week, Kim Kardashian herself posted a photo on her Instagram account showing her out on the street in a pair of pyjamas. No doubt from her own collection, this outfit looked great on her, worn with a corseted top and heels.

And we can easily imagine the star — and many others — in pyjama ensembles on a red carpet or in the front row of a fashion show, though perhaps not so much during a supermarket run. The fashion icon is not the only one showing off some stylish homewear outside of home these days. Far from it.

There was of course Billie Eilish and Jesse Rutherford in pyjamas, slippers, plus a matching comforter (the ultimate lazy look0 by Gucci on the red carpet of the LACMA Art + Film Gala last November, as well as French blogger and model Carla Ginola whose pyjamas did not go unnoticed on the snowy summits.

And the trend is still in its infancy. Whether considered an ultra-sophisticated interior piece, or a chic casual suit, paired with ‘real’ ready-to-wear pieces, pyjamas have well and truly begun their evolution, moving to take up a whole new position in women’s wardrobes.

And considering some of the launches of these last few months, like the collaboration between Jacquemus and homewear brand Tekla, there’s no doubt that pyjamas should be increasingly making appearances on the street, winning over more wearers. The epitome of lazywear. — ETX Studio
