KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 29 — It’s been so hot, especially just before noon, that I reckon one can probably fry an egg on a hot sidewalk.
Here’s the spoiler... it’s not possible to cook an egg that way but you do get how sweltering the day is when the strong sunshine hits your face.
One would think the last thing anyone wants to eat is a bowl of steaming hot pork noodles but not at this stall located along the infamous Taman Muda Food Street.
That sight piqued my curiosity especially since the place I was looking for was closed for the recent neverending holiday.
Turns out this eight-year-plus stall is on the radar for locals who visit for their bowls of plenty, so heaped with pork till the broth almost threatens to spill over if you’re not a professional tray juggler.
The selection of toppings will have you confused about how much you can load up your bowl of noodles.
Perhaps, lose the noodles?
But then the flavours won’t work so well without those slippery strands being the back-up chorus for the cloudy broth. a sure indicator that large bones were cooked slow and low to eke out all of that sweetness.
Maybe a limited permutation of what you prefer, from liver, pork patties or live dangerously with the soft kidney or perhaps a rolled intestine with its inviting layers.
Prized items like pig’s kidney, small intestines and stomach are usually gone before lunch so the early bird catches those items.
The broth is a game changer — not bogged down by artificial additives — naturally sweet tasting with distinct flavour of the items it’s been slowly brewed with.
Just before it’s presented to the customer, a bottle with holes at the cap acts like a rice wine “sprinkler” blessing each bowl with flavour.
A spoonful of lard fritters and fried garlic complete the whole bowl for a satisfying meal.
For those who wish to not sweat over a steaming bowl of noodles in the heat, there’s always the dry option, where noodles are separated from the broth and tossed with a dark brown sauce that feels more like it’s used for colour rather than flavour.
Apparently the secret of these bowls of noodles is freshly slaughtered pork, sourced all the way from Pudu wet market.
Locating this stall is a bit tough especially if you’re not a resident here but it shares the same space with Fuji Chicken Rice Shop, located right opposite Drs Wong & Partners Dentist along Jalan Bunga Tanjung 10.
