BEIJING, June 17 — Two Chinese football fans died suddenly after staying up all night to watch the World Cup, the Apple Daily reported.
According to the report, 51-year-old Li Mingqiang, a former celebrity in Dalian football circles died suddenly while watching the Spain-Netherlands match with his friends after dinner last Friday night. In the middle of the game, Li appeared unwell, prompting friends to make emergency calls immediately but it was too late. Li’s friends say that Li had been suffering from severe heart disease.
The other victim of football fanaticism was a 25-year-old man in Jiangsu, whom friends found lying motionless in his bedroom yesterday morning. His computer was turned on. He was pronounced dead upon arrival of an emergency rescue team.
With the world now feeling the World Cup fever, many football fans on this side of the globe are staying up all night to watch the games live, with deadly consequences. Doctors say that fans tend to be ‘over-excited’, which is potentially dangerous for people with poor physical condition as they will be likely to suffer from angina pectoris, myocardial infarction and other diseases. What’s more, drinking too much will cause high blood pressure, bringing unexpected risks.
Fans are advised practise relaxation techniques like stretching their body and to soothe their eyes and body from time to time while watching the games. Most importantly, getting sufficient sleep is the best way to avoid extreme fatigue.
