SEPTEMBER 11 — Artificial intelligence is no longer a distant promise. It is already reshaping how Malaysians learn, work, communicate, and access information. With the National AI Action Plan 2026–2030 placing AI at the centre of the country’s development agenda, and with AI Malaysia launched at Cyber Axis Tower in Cyberjaya on July 28, 2026, the education sector must now prepare for one of its most significant transformations.
The question is no longer whether AI will enter classrooms. It already has. The real test is whether Malaysia’s education system can use it responsibly, fairly, and intelligently. The National AI Action Plan provides a roadmap for responsible AI adoption and talent development. For schools, universities, teachers, and students, it is more than a technology policy; it is a challenge to rethink how learning should be supported, improved, and safeguarded.
Used well, AI could make personalised learning more practical. A student struggling with mathematics could receive targeted exercises, while another who has mastered the topic could move on to more challenging material. Teachers could benefit too. If AI safely assists with administrative duties, lesson preparation, and basic assessment, teachers may have more time for what technology cannot easily replace: inspiring students, understanding their difficulties, and providing meaningful human guidance.
That promise, however, comes with serious responsibilities.
Education is not simply about obtaining the correct answer. It is about learning how to ask questions, evaluate evidence, solve problems, and form independent judgements. If students rely on AI to write every essay or complete every assignment, they may become efficient at producing work without actually learning. This makes AI literacy essential. Malaysian schools and universities should not merely teach students how to operate AI tools. They should teach them how to question AI-generated information, identify bias, protect personal data, and verify sources. Students must also understand the difference between using AI as a learning assistant and using it as a shortcut around their own thinking.
Teachers will require support as well. It is unreasonable to expect educators to embrace AI simply because the technology is available. Training and professional development must accompany its introduction. Teachers need to understand both the possibilities and limitations of AI so they can decide when technology genuinely improves learning and when traditional teaching methods remain more effective.
Equally important is access. Students in rural areas and lower-income communities should have the same opportunities as those in better-equipped schools and universities. Without investment in digital infrastructure, devices, and teacher training, the AI revolution could widen the educational divide rather than close it. Malaysia now has an opportunity to prepare young people for an AI-driven economy. Yet the goal should not be classrooms dominated by machines. The goal should be classrooms that produce more capable, thoughtful, and independent learners.
AI can provide information, but teachers provide wisdom. AI can generate answers, but students must learn to question them. Human judgement, creativity, empathy, and integrity still give education its true purpose.
Malaysia’s AI future may begin with technology, but its success will ultimately depend on the students, teachers, and citizens we prepare today.
