KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14 — The final list of sports events to be contested at the 2027 SEA Games in Malaysia is expected to be confirmed as early as the end of this month.
Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (Masoc) and Asean Para Games 2027, Datuk Abdul Rashid Yaakub, said about 492 events across 43 sports were planned for the biennial Games, although the total had yet to be finalised.
He said preparations were underway to complete the technical handbooks for each sport before finalising the number of events to be contested at the 34th edition of the Games.
“Once we complete the technical handbooks, hopefully within the next two or three weeks, we will finalise the number of events for each sport.
“We expect to do so, Insya-Allah, by the end of this month or early November,” he told Bernama in a recent interview.
Abdul Rashid said total athlete participation at the 2027 SEA Games was estimated at between 7,000 and 8,000, based on the 43 sports approved earlier.
However, the former National Sports Council director-general said a more accurate figure would only be available after participating countries submitted their athletes’ entries through the registration system provided.
On accommodation, he said athletes and officials would be housed in three-star hotels and above, with the organisers opting not to adopt a traditional sports village concept.
“We are prioritising hotels close to the competition venues as this will make transport arrangements easier,” he said.
The 2027 SEA Games, which will be held across four main clusters in Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak, Penang and Johor, are scheduled to take place from Sept 18 to 29 next year. — Bernama
