ACCRA, Aug 22 — In a move to protect the integrity of Ghana’s domestic football league, authorities have announced a ban on betting companies offering odds on football matches, according to Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kurt Okraku, reported Xinhua.

Addressing delegates at the association’s 32nd congress, Okraku said the move was intended to crack down on match-fixing, which has plagued some leagues around the world.

He described the decision by the football authorities as a key step towards protecting the integrity of the country’s domestic league.

Okraku explained that the intention behind restricting betting companies from offering odds on Ghana Premier League (GPL) matches is to reduce financial inducements that could influence match outcomes.

The GFA president said: “No betting company has been licensed to place odds on domestic leagues.”

The FA said the move forms part of measures introduced to create a more transparent environment for football stakeholders while safeguarding the credibility of the GPL.

Among the issues discussed by the FA president ahead of the start of the 2026-27 GPL season were efforts to build financially stronger clubs, improved infrastructure, develop grassroots football, enhance welfare, strengthen governance and promote greater commercialisation of domestic football.

The new Ghana Premier League season is set to begin on the weekend of Sept 4-7 and conclude on the weekend of May 28-31, 2027. — Bernama-Xinhua
