KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 — Malaysia’s hopes of securing at least one title were dashed after the national shuttlers lost in the finals of the Indonesian Masters Grand Prix Gold Badminton Championship at the Dome Arena, Balikpapan East Kalimantan Indonesia, today.

World junior champion, Goh Jin Wei, who was vying for her second international title after winning at the Orleans International Championship in France in April, put up a stiff resistance against the top seed, Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand before losing in 15-21 and 13-21 in the women’s singles final, according to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) website.

National second mixed doubles pair and third seeds, Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing also suffered the same fate, losing 16-21 and 17-21 to second seeded Ronald Alexander/Melati Daeva Oktavianti of Indonesia.

Wahyu Nayaka Arya Pankaryanira/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo then delivered the second title for the hosts by defeating Han Chengkai/Zhou Haodong of China, winning in 21-16 and 21-18 in the men’s doubles.

China’s shuttler, Shi Yuqi won the men’s singles title after his opponent who is also his compatriot, Huang Yuxiang decided to withdraw in the second set after trailing 0-11. Shi won 21-12 in the first set.

Chae Yoo Jung/Kim So Yeong of South Korea won the women’s doubles title after dislodging Thais pair of Jongkolphan Kititharakul/Rawinda Prajongjai, 21-18 and 22-20. — Bernama
