PETALING JAYA, June 14 — The National Sports Council (NSC) have promised the Malaysia Karate Federation (Makaf) a suitable venue for their exponents to train in ahead of their preparations for next year’s SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur.

Mailsport had on June 9 reported Makaf secretary Vincent Chen pleading for the sport to have a proper venue to train to get the exponents ready for the SEA Games and the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, where karate has been recommended.

The national exponents are currently training at the National Sports Council in Bukit Jalil, but Vincent said the place is not suitable for athletes as it is too small for the juniors and seniors to train at the same time.

The evening training session also takes place without the air-conditioning, which is shut down after working hours.

“The Bukit Jalil Sports Complex is under renovation, and one of our main objectives is to give them a proper training spot. Not just for the karate but all sports to be exact. We are in the process to make it happen,” said NSC director-general Datuk Shapawi Ismail.

The contingent are currently gearing up for the world championships in Austria in October, with Asian Games gold medallist Syakilla Salni Jefrey Krisnan the brightest prospect for a medal.
