PETALING JAYA, Sept 8 — The National Sports Council (NSC) have set-up an investigation taskforce to probe into the accident involving national backup cyclist Nur Rozi Yanti Mohd Rodzi, who has regained consciousness and is showing positive response.

“All training programmes have been stopped until we complete our investigation. Datuk Abdul Jalil Abdullah (deputy director-general) will spearhead the investigation unit with the help of the National Sports Institute and the Malaysian National Cycling Federation, who will also assist us in speaking to witnesses, coaches and the driver,” said NSC director-general Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail yesterday.

Nur Rozi Yanti, 17, is still in intensive care after she was hit by her team’s escort van on Saturday.

Her accident follows the death of 15-year-old Syafiq Imran Syahril, a junior state cyclist who was killed during training when he fell and was crushed by an oncoming trailer in 2013.

Shapawi said NSC was working together with police and the Road Transport Department to beef up security for cyclists who put their lives on the line each time they take to the roads for training.

“We are looking to increase the safety aspects for them, including the possibility of a police escort. The cyclists have no choice but to train on roads to improve their endurance, but we will try to make it safer for them.

“The safety procedures will be implemented as soon as investigations are complete.

“In the meantime, cyclists are free to train on stationary bikes, NSC compound or the velodrome,” said Shapawi, adding that the driver who hit Nur Rozi Yanti has been suspended until further notice.
