PUTRAJAYA, Aug 19 — National athletes will enjoy an increase in training allowances starting next month under a revised Athletes Training Allowance Scheme announced by the Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.
Khairy said the basic allowance of senior athletes would be increased from RM500 to RM800 while athletes in the back up squad will see their allowance increased from
"The scheme introduced in 2007 had not been revised since. The allowance scheme was based on merit of athletes' performance ranging from RM500 as the basic to RM3,500 as the highest for Olympic Games medal winners," he said in his speech at the Sports Incentive Scheme (SHAKAM), here tonight.
Khairy said the allowance scheme would also include senior athletes who are not full time athletes and those who are nursing injuries for more than six months would receive RM500 a month.
Training allowance for Asian Games and Commonwealth Games medal winners has been set at RM2,500 a month for (gold), RM2,000 (silver) and RM1,500 (bronze).
Winners of gold medals at the world stage, receive RM3,500 a month followed by RM3,000 for silver and RM2,500 for bronze while SEA Games gold medal winners earn RM2,000, silver RM1,500 and bronze RM1,000. — Bernama
