NAYPYITAW, Dec 14 — Vivian Ho-Woon Khe Wei tonight upset the top seed to win the gold medal in the SEA Games women’s badminton doubles final at Wunna Theikdi Indoor Stadium here today.
Fielded as a non-seeded pair, the national doubles displayed outstanding performance to beat the top pair, Nitya Krishinda Maheswari-Greysia Polii of Indonesia, in three sets.
In the first set, Vivian Ho-Khe Wei won 21-17, but in the haste to close the match, they lost the second set 18-21.
In the rubber game, they kept their cool and wrapped the match with a 21-17 win.
The victory saved the national badminton team from coming back without a gold medal when all other players failed to enter the finals.
Malaysia collected three bronze medals through two men’s double pairs and one mixed doubles pair who were knocked out in the semi-finals yesterday.
The medals were contributed by Lim Khim Wah/Ow Yao Han and Goh V Shem/Teo Kok Siang in the men’s doubles event and Tan Aik Quan/Lai Pei Jing in the mixed doubles event. — Bernama
