SINGAPORE, Sept 1 — Singapore’s largest car-sharing platform GetGo has launched a new service allowing users to drive its vehicles across Peninsular Malaysia, including to Kuala Lumpur and Cameron Highlands.

Mothership reported that the new “Drive to Malaysia” feature allows users to book eligible GetGo vehicles through its app, with the vehicles registered with Malaysia’s Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) system.

The service allows users to drive anywhere in West Malaysia, with crossings permitted through the Woodlands Causeway or Tuas Second Link.

GetGo said the service offers a more predictable way to manage the cost of driving to Malaysia, with no deposit, rental-store visit or mileage charges regardless of the distance travelled.

“There are no deposits required to make a Drive to Malaysia booking, no rental stores to visit, and no mileage charge regardless of how far users drive in West Malaysia,” GetGo said in a statement on September 1.

The company said a cross-border surcharge of 30 per cent of the time charge applies, subject to a daily cap based on vehicle category and travel day.

For Select vehicles, the surcharge is capped at S$20 (RM63.50) per day on weekdays and eves of public holidays, and S$30 on weekends and public holidays.

For Plus vehicles, the cap is S$25 per day on weekdays and eves of public holidays, and S$35 on weekends and public holidays.

Users can also opt for Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) coverage, with the standard rate increasing from five to 10 per cent of the total booking charge, while Enhanced CDW rises from 10 to 20 per cent.

The service also allows users to add a pre-registered co-driver, enabling two insured drivers to share the journey under the same insurance coverage.

Bookings must be for at least 12 hours and no more than five days, and can be made up to 30 days in advance.

The vehicles can only be driven in Peninsular Malaysia and users are not permitted to cross into Thailand or any other country.

Eligible vehicles are marked with a Malaysia badge on the GetGo app, with the applicable surcharge and total price shown before users confirm their booking.

GetGo said it had previously tested the service with a selected group of existing users, receiving nearly 2,000 expressions of interest within 48 hours of opening the beta programme.

The company has more than 3,000 vehicles across over 1,700 locations in Singapore and more than 500,000 registered drivers.
