SINGAPORE, July 30 — Singapore will test its progress against some of South-east Asia’s toughest opposition after being drawn with hosts Indonesia, Malaysia and India in Group A of the inaugural Fifa Asean Cup 2026, which will be held in Jakarta.
Head coach Gavin Lee said the tournament comes at a crucial stage in the Lions’ development, with matches against quality regional opponents providing a valuable opportunity to assess the team’s capabilities and continue raising their standards.
“Every international window is another chance to raise our standards, keep improving and become more consistent.
“That is the challenge we have set ourselves, and our focus is on making the most of every opportunity to grow as a team,” he said in a statement today.
The tournament, to be held from September 24 to October 3, 2026, will feature 14 teams competing across two divisions — the Premier Division (Division 1) and the Challenge Division (Division 2).
The Premier Division, hosted by Indonesia, comprises two groups of four teams, with Singapore placed in Group A. The Challenge Division, meanwhile, consists of two groups of three teams and will be played in Hong Kong.
Meanwhile, Football Association Singapore (FAS) general secretary Badri Ghent said the opportunity to participate in the tournaments would contribute to the broader development of Singapore football.
“It helps inspire the next generation, deepens Singaporeans’ connection with the national team and strengthens the football culture we’re building for the future,” he added. — Bernama
