SINGAPORE, Sept 23 — Singapore influencer Genie Yamaguchi has been ordered to wear an electronic tag and observe a nightly curfew after admitting to stealing more than S$600 (RM2,000) worth of goods from a Don Don Donki outlet in the city-state.
Accrdding to The Straits Times, the 30-year-old, who runs a preserved flower service and a beauty aesthetics clinic, was issued a three-month Day Reporting Order (DRO) today.
The community-based sentence spares her a fine or jail term but requires regular reporting to a supervision centre. She must also remain indoors from 10pm to 6am daily.
Court documents show that Yamaguchi and her friend, 29-year-old Lee Suet Keay Cheryl, loaded 27 items into a cart at the Japanese discount chain’s Orchard Central outlet around 2.30am on August 25, 2024 and left without paying. The store operates round the clock.
Among the stolen goods were beauty products, bags and food, including a Colorrose Queen’s Cameo Blush priced at S$30.90, two Melano CC Brightening Essences worth S$25 each, and a Sanrio tote bag valued at S$67.90. The total haul came to S$628.90.
According to Chinese-language daily Shin Min Daily News, a staff member later recognised the pair and alerted a manager. CCTV footage confirmed the theft and a police report was lodged. Yamaguchi and Lee were arrested the following month, but only nine of the items were recovered. Yamaguchi later compensated the store, reimbursing it on August 22 this year.
Prosecutors noted that Yamaguchi had no prior criminal record and asked for an assessment for a DRO, which involves counselling and rehabilitation.
Her lawyer agreed, telling the court that her client had already paid back Don Don Donki for the stolen items.
Yamaguchi, who has about 14,800 followers on Instagram, has not commented publicly on the case.
