KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 4 — September is already shaping up to be a big month for entertainment, with Malaysian productions making a strong showing in cinemas and streaming platforms.
Local action movie Chelot shot to No. 1 at the Malaysian box office, overtaking Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which now sits in second place.
Directed by Adrian Teh, Chelot stands out for its commitment to practical filmmaking, with around 95 per cent of the film’s action created using practical effects and limited CGI.
From explosive set pieces to bullet-hit effects, the film places a strong emphasis on realism and physicality — an approach that appears to be paying off at the box office, where it has already grossed RM1.1 million.
That growing appetite for Malaysian content can also be seen on streaming platforms, with Bulan Henti Bicara topping Netflix’s charts, while Cela sits at No. 1 on Viu.
Elsewhere, Futurama Season 14 is holding the No. 1 spot on Disney+, while Ammar Haikal’s Gila Bayang is among the most-listened-to Malay tracks on Spotify.
