KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 — After 10 years away from the world of cinema, Erma Fatima is returning to the director’s chair — but not simply for the sake of making another film.
For the veteran Malaysian actress, filmmaker and television producer, Langit 2 Warna represents something more personal: a return prompted by a story she felt was important enough to bring to the big screen.
The film, which explores love, family, faith, personal beliefs and the price of truth, brings together a high-profile cast from Malaysia and Indonesia.
Its story will unfold across Malaysia, Indonesia, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, with the locations intended to become more than picturesque settings.
Each is expected to form part of the characters’ spiritual and emotional journeys.x
Why now?
Speaking at the “Langit 2 Warna — cast reveal” event at Wyndham Suites KLCC in Kuala Lumpur, Erma reflected on what ultimately brought her back to filmmaking.
“I did not want to return simply because I wanted to make a film,” she said.
“I wanted to return when I had a story that truly made me feel that it needed to be brought to life.”
For Erma, that moment came with Langit 2 Warna.
The project also marks an important point in a career that has increasingly centred on television over the past decade.
Rather than viewing her absence from cinema as an end, Erma saw television as a different platform through which she could explore subjects and messages that mattered to her.
“For 10 years, I never gave up,” she said.
“I continued fighting for television because I feel there are many messages that I need to deliver to viewers through television that I cannot necessarily express on the big screen.”
She described her decision to step away from the film world and its glamour as part of a personal journey connected to her faith.
“I left the world of film and glamour because I felt there was a struggle I needed to go through for my religion, and I believed television was the right platform for that.”
But eventually, she realised she missed cinema.
“So, today, I’m back.
“And I have to make sure that my return brings something bigger than what I have done on television.”
A cast built around two countries
If Erma’s return is one of the film’s major talking points, its cast is another.
Indonesian star Reza Rahadian takes on the role of Salafi, while acclaimed Malaysian actress Ummi Nazeera plays Innara.
Veteran Indonesian actress Christine Hakim stars as Ibu Aishah Khalida.
The Malaysian ensemble also features Eman Manan as Ustaz Taufiq, Umie Aida as Hamidah, Datuk Ahmad Tamimi Siregar as Ustaz Huzaimi, Mohammad Samih Salem Assahouri as Maulana, Ismail Yaacob as Ustaz Syahid, Rosdeen Suboh as Kamil, Sharifah Aryana as Safiyah, Hazwani Helmi as Izzara, Heliza Helmi as Aliyah and Zizi Kirana as Nadia.
Erma described herself as being ‘101 per cent’ involved in selecting the actors, while acknowledging the support of friends and partners who helped bring the ensemble together.
Among the names she particularly wanted was Christine Hakim, with whom she has shared a friendship for a decade.
“Christine and I have been friends for 10 years, so I already had a relationship with her,” Erma said.
Getting Reza on board, however, was a different proposition.
Erma knew the Indonesian actor was selective about the projects he accepted and admitted she was initially unsure whether he would agree to take part.
Christine, she revealed, was instrumental in encouraging her to approach Reza.
Securing an actor of Reza’s calibre became important because the role demanded someone capable of carrying the film’s emotional and thematic weight.
More than a love story
At its heart, Langit 2 Warna is a story about love.
But the film is not presenting love as something simple or purely romantic.
The film examines love through the more difficult questions of faith, family, principles, sacrifice, loss and choice.
Its central question is not simply who two people ultimately end up with, but what they are prepared to sacrifice to preserve the love they believe in.
That makes the film’s idea of romance considerably more complicated.
In a world where differences can increasingly become reasons for people to turn away from one another, Langit 2 Warna asks how far someone is willing to go when the person they love challenges the beliefs and principles they have held all their lives.
It is a conflict between the heart and conviction — and, ultimately, between what a person wants and what they are willing to give up.
“For a long time, I have wanted to see a love film that isn’t afraid to be grand,” Erma said.
“Grand in its emotions, grand in its world, grand in its sacrifices.”
Produced by Rumah Karya Citra (M) Sdn Bhd, with Datin Seri Rosmariza Che Umar as co-producer, Langit 2 Warna is scheduled to begin filming in November and December 2026.
Its release date has yet to be revealed.
