KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — Hong Kong cinema will take centre stage in Kuala Lumpur this week as the Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation returns with a 10-day showcase featuring six films, filmmaker appearances and immersive experiences.
Running from August 21 to August 30 at AurumTheatre, The Exchange TRX, the event will present six Hong Kong productions, with each film screening at least once throughout the programme.
The line-up spans a variety of genres, from the opening film Afterpiece to the coming-of-age drama Bird of Paradise, youth romance Wakesurf LOVERS, mystery black comedy Unidentified Murder, documentary Palimpsest: The Story of a Name and absurdist workplace comedy Dog Day Evening.
Beyond the screenings, audiences will have the opportunity to meet filmmakers and cast members involved in the productions.
Director Keane Wong, Joey Wu and cast members Angela Yuen, Renci Yeung, Kevin Chu and Elaine Jin will attend the opening ceremony at Aurum Theatre on August 21 at 7.00pm.
The programme will also feature post-screening sharing sessions, giving audiences the chance to hear directly from directors and cast members about their creative approaches, character development and experiences on set.
These sessions will offer a closer look at the stories behind the films and the processes that brought them to the screen.
This year’s Kuala Lumpur edition will also take Hong Kong cinema beyond the theatre, featuring a film talk at a local university where participating filmmakers will share their creative journeys and experiences with students and faculty.
Adding another dimension to the programme is a sensory film exhibition featuring immersive art installations inspired by Hong Kong cinema.
The exhibition aims to allow audiences to experience the atmosphere and creative elements of the films beyond the traditional cinema screen.
The Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation is organised by the Asian Film Awards Academy and supported by the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau’s Create Hong Kong (CCIDA), the Film Development Fund (FDF) and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Kuala Lumpur.
The event is held in collaboration with Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) and distributor GSC Movies (GSCM) as part of the Asian Film Awards Academy’s cultural exchange initiatives to promote Hong Kong cinema internationally.
