KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 5 — Remakes are often hit or miss, as demonstrated by the numerous attempts in the world of filmmaking.

However, the Malaysian adaptation of the 2019 Tamil hit Kaithi, titled Banduan, proves that a remake can succeed when done right.

Directed by Kroll Azry, its gala premiere was held yesterday at TGV Suria KLCC, attended by an impressive lineup of Malaysian stars, along with a special guest appearance by Karthik Sivakumar, also known as Karthi, who played the lead role of Dilli in the original Tamil version.

For those unfamiliar with Kaithi, the story unfolds over a single, suspense-filled night, following a recently released prisoner, Dilli (Karthi), who must transport poisoned policemen to a hospital while evading criminals—all for a chance to see his daughter.

Banduan mirrors this gripping storyline, with legendary actor Datuk Aaron Aziz stepping into the lead role of Dali, and like Dilli, he is thrust into a high-stakes situation, racing against time to save lives while navigating danger, all to reunite with his daughter.

What sets Banduan apart is how it balances fidelity with localisation.

While it remains true to the original plot, certain scenes have been adapted to fit the Malaysian context, with a few new moments added to enrich the story.

The result is a remake that doesn’t feel like a mere copy but a faithful retelling with a distinct local flavour.

In Karthi’s own words, the film faithfully captures the essence of the original, with top-notch music, editing, and overall production.

The cast shares thoughts on the film

Aaron highlighted his character, Dali, whose strength and toughness contrast with his vulnerability and tenderness toward his family.

“This is what I like about the character and what’s unique about him,” he said.

Datuk Afdlin Shauki shared, “I was completely amazed by the actors’ performances.

“We managed to create a whole different world, and I hope audiences will be interested in watching it again and again.”

“To create a world—a human creation—so magnificent is not easy,” said Datuk Rosyam Nor.

“I can see this film being full of emotion while offering a different kind of entertainment, and I believe the clash between two cultures can be balanced with the right guidance,” he added.

The film also features a lineup including Fadli Masoot, Adlin Aman Ramlie, Hushairi Husain, Amir Nafis, Esma Daniel, Abi Madyan, Hawra, Dayang Areeda, Joshua Michael, Zairi Abdul Aziz, and Meynillan.

As announced yesterday by producer Kalyana Devan, this action-packed film will have a simultaneous release in Canada, the United States, and France—making it the first Malay film to do so, with slots already confirmed—while also hitting cinemas nationwide tomorrow, November 6.
