KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 — Film director Syamsul Yusof has officially parted ways with first wife Puteri Sarah Liyana.

Syamsul performed the ‘talak satu’ divorce proclamation toward at the Wilayah Persekutuan’s Syariah Lower Court today in front of judge Syarie Akmalluddin Ilyas, who gave Sarah the green light to file for divorce under Seksyen 47 of the Islamic Family Law (Federal Territory) 1984.

According to Harian Metro, Akmalluddin also ordered Sarah to undergo her ‘edah’ period for three months aside from ordering her to register their divorce.

‘Edah’ is a period of waiting which Muslim women must observe following the death of their spouse or divorce.

Following their court proceedings, the couple via Awani Live has said that both of them have came to an agreement to amicably part ways.

According to Syamsul, both of them met up yesterday to sign the agreement which centres on the wellbeing of their two children - Syaikhul Islam and Summayyah.

“This is for the sake of our children’s future and their happiness. I will take care of my children’s needs.

“The agreement focuses on our kids. At the end of the day, if we only think about ourselves, it will affect our children.

“So me as a father and Sarah as mother, we don’t want to jeopardise our children’s future. Even though we’ve parted ways, at least it’s in a good way,” Syamsul said.

The Mat Kilau director also shared that the divorce is a test for him, however he is grateful for the peaceful ending between him and Sarah and added that both of them held no grudges.

Sarah will have custody of the children with Syamsul allowed to spend time with their children without any limits.

According to Sarah, Syamsul is welcomed to visit and spend time with their children at any time and she even made it compulsory for Syamsul to attend their children’s future events such as birthdays, sports day and graduations.

“My hope after this is that there will be no more dispute between us.

“Alhamdulillah everything is settled now, we met yesterday and we managed to settle everything from A to Z,” she said.

When asked how she felt after the divorce, Sarah simply replied ‘let the answer to how I’m feeling now stay with me alone’.

She added that she had no comment with regards to Syamsul bringing along second wife, Ira Kazar, to one of their children’s future events.

Syamsul, 39 and Puteri Sarah, 38 married on March 8, 2014.

In early January, Syamsul made a bombshell announcement that he had taken 27-year-old actress Ira Kazar as a second wife in Thailand after months of speculation.

The media frenzy continued with Puteri Liyana almost immediately filing for a divorce while Syamsul asked for her to come back to their matrimonial home to discuss matters.

Unwilling to be in a polygamous marriage, Puteri Liyana filed for divorce from Syamsul in mid-March.
