SINGAPORE, April 1 — Popular British band Coldplay lived up to the hype surrounding their show at the National Stadium yesterday evening as part of their A Head Full of Dreams Asian tour.
Their first concert in Singapore since 2009 saw the crowd of over 53,000 on their feet for most of their show, singing along to classics like Yellow and Fix You, and more recent hit songs like Hymn for the Weekend, featuring vocals by American singer Beyonce from their new album, A Head Full of Dreams.
Even at the end of their long final set, the crowd could not seem to get enough of charismatic lead singer Chris Martin and his band.
When the crowd sang the final line of Fix You in unison on their own, Martin responded, “That was incredible, thank you so much everybody.”
Their set list included songs such as Yellow, The Scientist, Everglow, Hymn for the Weekend, and Viva La Vida.
The Grammy-winning British band was originally supposed to play just one night in Singapore, but added a second show after overwhelming demand. All 100,000 tickets for both shows were snapped up within two hours of their release. Some 4,000 additional tickets to the performances at the National Stadium were released on Thursday (March 30) at 1pm. Although they only offer a restricted view of the stage, they sold fast. By 3pm, around 200 tickets, priced from US$78 to US$268 (RM250 to RM850, were available.
Coldplay said it would take song requests for its Asian shows, via Instagram. The song they played here was Till Kingdom Come, off their 2005 album X&Y.
Besides the electrifying performance, the band from UK dazzled the crowd with strong lighting and sound effects such as coloured laser beams glinting off confetti floating in the air and pyrotechnics setting the atmosphere in the stadium ablaze. The big, bouncing balloons from their previous concert made a comeback, this time multicoloured instead of yellow.
After Singapore, their first stop on the Asian tour, they will be heading to Manila to perform on April 4. — TODAY
