SINGAPORE, March 18 — When it comes to food, Karen Mok definitely knows what our little island has to offer.

In a recent video conference from Hong Kong, the Mandopop star said she intends to give herself a small treat after her show here in April.

“After the performance, I will eat pandan cake,” she chuckled.

But first, Mok plans to put up good show for her fans here in Singapore.

Her show, which will be her first here in 15 years, will feature special staging and lighting effects, as she attempts to recreate the Northern Lights using 1,000 laser lights — inspired by a three-month trip around the world with her husband, Johannes Natterer.

The 45-year-old will also play an electric guzheng and don costumes tailor-made for her by designers from Taiwan, France, Indonesia and Hong Kong at her upcoming Regardez concert.

It is the reason why Mok joked that she didn’t think it would be a very good idea to get her husband to cook for her, even though he was “very willing” to serve as her private chef on the tour.

“His best dishes are all pasta dishes, and he thinks I am too thin and that I should gain some weight, so when he cooks, he adds a lot of fat and cream on purpose. If I let him cook for me during my concert tour, I would definitely gain weight,” laughed Mok, who married Natterer, her sweetheart in high school, in 2011.

Instead, she has tasked her husband with taking care of the logistics when she performs in Europe later this year. (Mok holds the particular distinction of being the first Chinese singer to hold a concert in Milan and Madrid.)

When asked if being married meant she will dress more conservatively in the future, Mok said she has never changed her ideals as a performer, and will wear whatever she feels works best on stage. “Besides, my husband loves watching me dress like that, too,” the affable singer quipped.

In addition to a sizzling wardrobe, fans will also be able to look forward to an evening of Mok’s greatest hits from her two-decade career, as well as songs from her latest album, Departures.

“It’s been so many years since I’ve held a concert in Singapore, so I hope we will all be able to sing together,” said Mok, who is also concert director for her own show.

“And my fans don’t have to behave themselves either, because I am very exuberant, and those who come for my shows have to be exuberant as well.”

Karen Mok’s concert will be held at The Star Theatre on April 9.
