NEW YORK, May 13 — Although the superhero film slipped into second place at the US box office, it continued to dominate theaters globally, according to Rentrak.
Grossing US$106 million (RM343.2 million) during the weekend ending May 11, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” remained in the top spot at the worldwide box office. Meanwhile, “Neighbors” starring Zac Efron and Seth Rogen turned out to be a surprise hit, taking the box office by storm. The comedy grossed US$85.4 million during its opening weekend in 30 territories, taking second place worldwide.
In terms of total revenues to date, the second film in the new Spider-Man franchise now claims US$550.9 million, making it the second highest-grossing film of 2014, behind “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (US$695 million) and ahead of “Rio 2” (US$425 million).
At the US box office, the success of “Neighbors” had an impact on the superhero movie’s revenues, however. The frat-house comedy took in US$51 million at the domestic box office, compared to US$37 million for “Spider-Man.”
After rising into second place over the previous weekend, “The Other Woman” slipped back into third at the global box office. The comedy starring Cameron Diaz earned US$22 million in 61 territories. “Rio 2” fell into fourth place with US$19 million. — AFP-Relaxnews
