KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 29 — Bursa Malaysia opened higher for the third consecutive day today tracking overnight gains on Wall Street after the United States Federal Reserve (Fed) kept interest rates unchanged at 3.75 per cent to 4.00 per cent.
At 9.10 am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 4.71 points, or 0.29 per cent, to 1,618.58 from yestereday’s close of 1,613.87.
The benchmark index opened 0.57 of a point higher at 1,614.44.
Across the broader market, gainers outpaced losers 198 to 104, while 291 counters were unchanged, 2,284 untraded, and 161 suspended.
Turnover stood at 173.26 million units worth RM74.17 million.
Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Thong Pak Leng said the Fed’s decision to keep interest rates unchanged was widely expected, although concerns over persistent inflation remain.
On the home front, he said the benchmark index is gradually stabilising, although subdued trading activity suggests that investors remain selective.
“Nonetheless, we expect bargain hunting to continue among fundamentally sound banking, technology and plantation counters.
“Hence, for today, we envisage the benchmark index hovering within the 1,610-1,620 range,” he told Bernama.
