KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 7 — Umios Corporation, one of the world’s largest fishery and food companies, plans to broaden its footprint in Malaysia with new investments which will expand both its human and pet food business.
Manager of its overseas business section Keisuke Enomoto said Umios has completed its 51 per cent acquisition of Malaysia’s pet food producer Pet World International Sdn Bhd with an investment of ¥1.4 billion Japanese yen (100 yen= RM2.59) in September this year.
Umios, previously known as Maruha Nichiro, is headquartered in Tokyo. It has a 145-year history in the fishing industry.
“Any future investment depends on the scale of expansion in the food and pet business, and whether there is a need to increase or set up production facilities in Malaysia. This will depend on sales volume.
“We are set to distribute Japan-made jelly products for the Malaysian halal market next month,” he told Bernama at the recent Malaysia International Halal Showcase 2026.
“Malaysia, with its increasing population and income, is an attractive market. There is potential in the food business, particularly with our expertise as one of the world’s largest seafood suppliers,” he said.
It had revenue of ¥1.1 trillion Japanese in FY2025, he said.
Umios has operations in the USA, South America, Europe and Asia. Besides fishing, its other core business is food processing, fish farming, and trading of seafood, meat and poultry products.
It has frozen seafood factories and food processing businesses in Thailand, Vietnam, China, the US, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, he said. — Bernama
