GEORGE TOWN, Nov 9 — Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) provider EG Industries Bhd expects its RM180 million Smart Factory 4.0 in Batu Kawan near here to generate over 1,000 high-value jobs when it commences operations in 2024.

EG Industries group chief executive officer Datuk Alex Kang said the new facility would have state-of-the-art technologies and is poised to generate tremendous benefits for its customers, stakeholders and country.

“This milestone has been years in the making. Even before Covid-19, we began to place the building blocks in our smart technology roadmap, taking the holistic approach of preparing machinery, facilities and mindsets to ride the next technology wave.

“Our Batu Kawan factory is an important piece of the puzzle and we are pleased to undertake this endeavour to accelerate our growth,” he said in a statement, issued after the groundbreaking ceremony of the facility here today.

EG Industries’ first fully-automated Lights-Out Smart Factory 4.0 would be sited on 2.43 hectares (6 acres) of industrial land, with a 22,500 sq m built-up area for its production floor, office building and warehouse.

On completion in 2024, EG Industries’ total built-up area for its production, office and warehousing space, including its facilities in Sg Petani, Kedah, would increase by 45 per cent to 80,000 sq m from 55,000 sq m.

Kang said the group’s upcoming facility had recently attracted the attention of a few notable local and foreign customers.

“Among them are US-based Cambridge Industries Group (CIG) which produces advanced high-speed optical signal transmitters and receivers for 5G wireless networks (optical modules) using photonics and semiconductor technologies for their global customers. This would be CIG’s first-ever pioneer technology transfer to South East Asia,” he said. — Bernama
