SEBERANG PERAI, June 16 — Taiwanese electronics firm Hotayi Electronics (M) Sdn Bhd has reinvested RM1 billion into a new facility in Batu Kawan Industrial Park.

Announcing this at the ground-breaking ceremony today, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the new facility will create 1,000 new jobs in Penang.

“This development is expected to increase Hotayi’s total employment to 1,450 jobs including new high-income jobs in the field of mechanical and technical engineering, from the current headcount of 450,” he said in his speech.

Phase One of the new facility will involve the construction of a 250,000-sq ft facility and it is expected to start operations in the first quarter of 2018.

The new facility in Batu Kawan will adopt the “Industry 4.0” and smart manufacturing concepts while incorporating eco-friendly qualities.

“This reinvestment will also further improve the eco-system in Batu Kawan Industrial Park and will benefit the local SMEs, especially those in the SME Village and SME clusters,” Lim said.

Hotayi Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Lee Hung Lung said the company chose to reinvest in Penang due to the local talent pool.

“We know we will be able to get skilled workers for our new facility here, this is why we decided to reinvest in Penang,” he told a press conference after the ceremony.

The Hotayi Penang facility was first established in 1992 and has expanded from an electronics manufacturing services (EMS) company to Vertical Integration (VI) Manufacturing.
