KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 24 — Shares on Bursa Malaysia opened slightly lower Tuesday with light interest seen in selected heavyweights and penny stocks.

At 9.10 am, the benchmark index slipped 5.87 points or 0.32 per cent to1,790.49, after opening 5.87 lower at 1,790.78.

HwangDBS Vickers Research said the key FBM KLCI could struggle to recover lost ground today after stumbling to slip below 1,800 yesterday.

From a technical perspective, it said the benchmark index might drift with a marginal downward bias for the time being.

“This follows a weak overnight performance on Wall Street. Major US bellwethers were down between 0.3 per cent and 0.5 per cent at the closing bell as investors await fresh market leads,” it added.

Weak performance on the local bourse was also in tandem with most regional markets.

Japan's Nikkei 225 went down 0.38 per cent to 14,686.34, Hong Kong's Hang Seng declined 0.56 per cent to 23,371.54 and Indonesia's Jakarta Composite eased 0.46 per cent to 4,562.86.

On Bursa Malaysia, the Industrial Index shed 0.18 of-a-point to 3,048.06, the Plantation Index lost 1.08 points to 8,336.29 and the Finance Index erased 125.83 points to 16,809.97.

The FBM Emas Index declined 30.29 points to 12,434.89, the FBM100 Index was declined 30.72 points to 12,176.03, the FBM 70 added 2.42 points to 14,136.78 and the FBM Ace rose 6.19 points to 5,432.09.

Gainers edged losers 112 to 109, with 146 counters unchanged, 1,213 untraded and 13 others were suspended.

Volume was light at 129.005 million shares worth RM43.023 million.

Among actives, Metronic Global and Salcon inched up half-a-sen each to 11.5 sen and 69 sen, respectively, The Media Shoppe and MAS were flat at 15.5 sen and 32.5 sen, respectively, while Karambunai Corp edged down half-a-sen to 10.5 sen.

Heavyweights, Maybank rose two sen to RM10.02, Maxis added one sen to RM7.02 but Axiata, Sime Darby and Petronas Chemicals were flat at RM6.91, RM9.52 and RM6.93, respectively, and CIMB shed five sen to RM7.90. — Bernama
