KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 — Maybank has so far interviewed five potential candidates for the post of chief executive officer (CEO), says chairman Tan Sri Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor.

He said the interviews were ongoing and the result would be announced soon.

Megat Zaharuddin said the potential candidates were from within Maybank and external sources with good track records in banking.

The new CEO is to replace former president/CEO Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar, who left to become a minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of the Economic Planning Unit.

It was widely reported that the potential internal candidates were current Maybank officer-in-charge/group chief financial officer Mohd Rafique Merican Mohd Wahiduddin, investment banking head Tengku Datuk Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz and Bank Internasional Indonesia president director Datuk Khairussaleh Ramli.

Bursa Malaysia CEO Datuk Tajuddin Atan and Axiata Group Bhd president Datuk Seri Jamaludin Ibrahim were also reported to be on the list of external candidates.

“We are looking for the best candidate and one who clearly understands the challenges,” he told reporters after presenting Maybank Scholarship Awards worth RM30 million to 51 deserving students.

He said the Maybank Scholarship Awards encompass financial support including tuition fees, living allowances, a laptop and paid practical training for the scholars.

These scholars were shortlisted from a total of 6,931 applications received this year. — Bernama
