TAWAU, Nov 2 — Three members of a family were killed while a 15-year-old girl was seriously injured after the car they were travelling in skidded off the road at Batu 14, Jalan Apas, here at about 9.30am today.
Tawau police chief ACP Rosdi Mat Jusoh said the deceased were a 50-year-old woman and her two sons, aged 30 and 28, who were pronounced dead at the scene at 10.16am.
He said the family was travelling from Kampung Bahagia, Sandakan, to Tawau when the 28-year-old son, who was driving, allegedly lost control of the car along a straight stretch of road.
The vehicle skidded onto the left shoulder, crashed into an oil palm tree, travelled about 60 metres before overturning and coming to a stop.
The teenage girl, who was seated in the back with her mother, sustained injuries to her abdomen and ribs.
In a statement today, Rosdi said initial checks found that the driver did not have a driving licence. The vehicle had been seized for inspection by the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (PUSPAKOM).
Police are also seeking independent witnesses to help determine the cause of the accident.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Rosdi reminded motorists to exercise caution and comply with traffic regulations. — Bernama
