JOHOR BAHRU, Oct 9 — Police have confirmed that the shooting incident at Jalan Gertak Merah near Johor Zoo here yesterday involved an officer who fired at a car being driven dangerously by a man with 16 previous criminal records.
Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the 28-year-old suspect, who was driving a Honda City with a 29-year-old female companion, was chased by police for one kilometre before the shooting occurred at the scene. Various types of drugs were also found.
Police fired two shots after the car rammed several civilian vehicles, with one of the shots striking the male suspect in the head.
“The suspects (the man and his companion) were still inside the car when the two shots were fired and did not act aggressively,” he told a press conference at the Johor contingent police headquarters here today.
Ab Rahaman said further checks on the suspect’s car found seven plastic packets containing 373.80 grammes of ecstasy powder and 17 vape cartridges containing 6.8 millilitres of ketamine liquid.
He said the male suspect had 16 previous criminal records involving offences including drug-related crimes, robbery, rape and theft, and was also wanted in connection with a drug offence in Seri Alam.
The female suspect, meanwhile, had one previous criminal record involving a drug offence, he said.
Ab Rahaman said urine screening tests found that both suspects tested positive for methamphetamine.
He said the male suspect, who was injured in the shooting, was in stable condition and receiving treatment at Sultanah Aminah Hospital here.
He added that police would apply for a remand order for the female suspect today. The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code, Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987, and Sections 39B and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. — Bernama
