KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 — A 22-year-old traffic policeman was injured after being struck by a car while controlling traffic for the Sultan of Kelantan, Sultan Muhammad V’s convoy in Tumpat, Kelantan, yesterday.
The incident occurred at about 1.25pm at the Kampung Kepulau traffic-light junction in Palekbang, where the officer from the Tumpat district Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division was closing the road from Morak towards Palekbang.
According to Harian Metro, Tumpat district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Khairi Shafie said the road closure was to allow Sultan Muhammad V’s convoy to pass as the Kelantan Ruler travelled to Friday prayers and a public feast held in conjunction with his 57th birthday celebrations.
“A Proton Saga driven by a 55-year-old local woman from the direction of Morak is believed to have failed to notice the police officer before hitting him,” Mohd Khairi said in a statement.
“The 22-year-old officer fell and suffered minor injuries.
“He was taken to Tumpat Hospital for outpatient treatment, while the driver was unhurt.”
Mohd Khairi said the case was being investigated under Section 79(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Police are also seeking dashcam footage or other recordings that could assist investigations.
“We advise all road users to comply with instructions from police officers carrying out traffic control duties and to pay full attention to road conditions, particularly during special operations and traffic-control exercises, to prevent unwanted incidents,” he said.
