KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 14 — A former director of a used car trading company was charged at three Sessions Courts today with 71 counts of cheating a businessman over the purchase of non-existent used vehicles, resulting in losses of RM4.7 million.

Kee Cher Kian, 34, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read out before Judges Azrul Darus, Norma Ismail and Muhammad Ilmami Ahmad.

Before Judge Azrul, Kee faced 26 charges in his capacity as a director of Buycar2u. He was accused of cheating Wong Yoong Jed, a director of Viso Capital Sdn Bhd and Lio Capital Sdn Bhd, by deceiving him into believing that various vehicles had been purchased.

These included the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire, Lexus RX200 and IS 250, Land Rover Evoque, Mini Cooper, Mercedes-Benz C200 and BMW X5.

This induced Wong to transfer RM1.69 million from Lio Capital and Viso Capital into Buycar2u’s bank account.

Before Judges Norma and Muhammad Ilmami, the accused faced 30 charges involving RM1.98 million and 15 charges involving RM1.02 million, respectively.

The offences were allegedly committed at several bank branches around the capital, including at Menara KL Sentral and Jalan Perak, between July 5, 2022 and Aug 3, 2022.

The charges were brought under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years and caning, and also liable to a fine upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutors Siti Suriatey Mohamed Yusoff and Eugenie Meredith Gilbert appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was represented by lawyer J. Matthews.

All three courts allowed the accused to be released on bail of RM215,000 with one surety, along with the additional condition that his passport be surrendered until the case is concluded.

The case mention was fixed for October 16.  — Bernama
