KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 — Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, the wife of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, attended Umno’s general assembly today amid his bid for clemency.
Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi then invited Rosmah to stand as delegates in Dewan Merdeka applauded and showed their appreciation.
“Hopefully there will be the best news today, God willing,” Zahid said when opening his policy speech, drawing thunderous applause from the hall.
Rosmah was seated next to Zahid’s wife, Datin Seri Hamidah Khamis.
The Federal Territories Pardons Board is expected to convene this morning.
FMT previously reported that former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s application is expected to be among the primary matters tabled before the board during this week’s sitting.
It remains unclear whether the board will arrive at an immediate decision or limit the session to preliminary deliberations.
A separate source indicated that the possibility of allowing Najib to serve the remainder of his prison term under house arrest may be broached, though it is uncertain whether that option will be formally deliberated during the morning meeting.
Yesterday, Zahid said he was hoping for the “best” outcome today for Najib’s latest application.
Najib, 72, was convicted of misappropriating RM42 million belonging to SRC International and sentenced to 12 years in prison, along with a RM210 million fine. He began serving his sentence at Kajang Prison on Aug 23, 2022.
In 2024, the FT Pardons Board halved his prison term to six years and reduced the fine to RM50 million.
However, Najib and his lawyers subsequently insisted that the partial pardon came with a royal addendum for him to serve out his remaining time at home, eventually suing to have this granted.
On Dec 22 last year, High Court judge Alice Loke dismissed Najib’s application to serve the remainder of his reduced sentence under house arrest. Najib withdrew his appeal against the decision in April this year.
