KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 — Pakatan Harapan (PH) has maintained that individuals convicted of corruption or abuse of power, particularly in high-profile cases, should serve the full sentences imposed by the courts.
In a statement posted on Facebook last night, the coalition said the rule of law also required ongoing judicial proceedings to be allowed to conclude independently and in an orderly manner.
“Any decision involving high-profile cases must take into account public confidence in the country’s commitment to implementing the agenda,” it said.
PH said previous high-profile corruption cases had damaged Malaysia’s international reputation, while recent efforts had helped rebuild confidence in the country’s institutions and governance.
The coalition also expressed support for the government’s efforts to combat corruption, financial leakages and abuse of power, while reaffirming its commitment to institutional reform.
The statement came ahead of a reported Federal Territories Pardons Board meeting scheduled for Friday.
Sin Chew Daily reported that a fresh pardon application by imprisoned former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was expected to be among the matters considered by the board.
The PH statement did not mention Najib, the application or the Pardons Board meeting.
