KOTA KINABALU, Sept 2 — An 11-year-old girl who was reported missing in Sungai Bengkoka, Pitas, yesterday afternoon was found drowned this morning.
Pitas Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) chief Noor Jali Maslah, in a statement today, said the victim was found by villagers at 7.36am, about one kilometre from the Fire and Rescue Control Centre (PKB).
He said firefighters then retrieved the victim using a stretcher before handing her body to the police.
Noor Jali said the search and rescue (SAR) operation was launched after the station received an emergency call at 5.17pm yesterday regarding an incident involving five victims in the river.
He said six personnel from BBP Pitas conducted the operation using a National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) boat, employing the Surface Water Rescue method within a one-kilometre search radius from the PKB.
In the incident, two girls, aged four and 14, nearly drowned and were sent to hospital, while an 18-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy were safe. — Bernama
