KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 2 — Former Bachok MP Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz took his oath of office as a senator for a second term today before Dewan Negara President Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah at the Senate chamber in Parliament.
Nik Mohamad Abduh was re-elected by the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly under Article 45(1)(a) of the Federal Constitution for a three-year term, effective from July 7, 2026, to July 6, 2029.
The son of the late Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat had previously served as a senator representing Kelantan for his first term from July 8, 2023, to July 7 this year, and has also served as MP for Pasir Mas and Bachok.
In his proclamation speech, Awang Bemee said the re-election reflected the continued confidence and trust in Nik Mohamad Abduh’s credibility, experience and ability to contribute meaningfully to parliamentary proceedings and the broader functioning of the institution.
He said the oath of a senator entails a solemn duty to uphold the Constitution, champion the welfare of the people and guarantee that the voices of all states are afforded their rightful place.
He said Nik Mohamad Abduh’s track record from his first Senate term would be leveraged to strengthen the institution’s functions, represent Kelantan’s interests as well as scrutinise national policies and legislation.
Meanwhile, Awang Bemee affirmed Parliament’s commitment to further enhance the country’s legislative institution, including through the enforcement of the Parliamentary Service Act.
He said such measures are crucial for reinforcing the principle of separation of powers, improving checks and balances, and bolstering Parliament’s autonomy and standing.
“Indeed, a strong Parliament strengthens democracy, and a strong democracy leads to more accountable governance,” he said.
According to the parliamentary calendar, the Senate sitting for the Third Meeting of the Fifth Term of the 15th Parliament will run for 14 days, beginning November 30. — Bernama
