KOTA BARU, Sept 1 — About 60,000 Malaysians are expected to spend an estimated RM36 million in southern Thailand during the five-day Merdeka Day and school holiday period.

The New Straits Times reported Thailand-Asean Halal Trade and Tourism Association president Aida Oujeh as saying the estimate covered travellers entering the country from August 29 to September 2.

The projected expenditure was based on average spending of RM600 per tourist on accommodation, food, shopping and leisure activities.

“The main destinations are Hat Yai, Phatthalung, Satun, Betong, Bangkok and Krabi.

“Hotels in popular destinations are about 95 per cent booked, reflecting strong demand from Malaysian tourists during the holiday period,” she was quoted as saying.

Aida said Danok, Padang Besar, Wang Kelian and Betong were among the busiest entry points, while the influx had benefited hotels, restaurants, retailers and tourism operators.

“From shopping in bustling Hat Yai to beach escapes and food hunts, Thailand remains an attractive destination for Malaysians seeking a quick getaway that offers a mix of familiarity and a different cultural experience,” she said.

Aida added that the turnout suggested a recent boycott call had not significantly affected Malaysian travel to Thailand during the holiday period.

The call followed an August 17 incident in which 17 Malaysian motorcyclists were issued summonses totalling 15,000 baht, or about RM1,850, for traffic offences in Hat Yai, after a viral video alleged that Thai authorities had “bullied” them.
