MIRI, Aug 31 — The shooting case involving a 17-year-old teenager in Long Lidong, Lawas, has been resolved with the arrest of a suspect on August 25, said Lawas district police chief DSP Liong Tindan.
Liong said following the arrest of the suspect, the police also recovered a homemade firearm, locally known as a ‘bakakuk’, believed to have been used in the incident.
“The firearm was found hidden at a hut not far from the suspect’s home. It had been placed on the ground and covered with a zinc sheet,” he said in a statement.
Police received a report on August 16 after the teenager was injured by a gunshot while cleaning a water catchment area about 1km from his home, he said.
Liong said police investigations later found that the victim had gone hunting in the forest with his relative when he was accidentally shot by his friend, who had mistaken him for an animal.
“The police are continuing investigations, including tracing witnesses and gathering other information related to the case.
“The public is urged to channel any information related to the case to the police and refrain from making speculations,” he said.
He added that the case was being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code and Section 37 of the Arms Act 1960. — The Borneo Post
