KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 — Malaysia needs to learn from China’s experience in strengthening the agricultural sector and food security through the use of technology, increased productivity and the development of rural areas that is planned in a systematic and continuous manner.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said Malaysia has great potential to continue strengthening the country’s agro-food sector by taking appropriate approaches based on the experiences of other countries, without neglecting the interests of local industry players.
“China has shown how the agricultural sector can be empowered through the use of technology, increased productivity, rural development and systematic and continuous planning.
“We need to dare to learn from the experiences of other countries, take an approach that suits our needs and at the same time continue to empower local farmers, rice farmers, livestock breeders and fishermen,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday.
Mohamad said he shared this in the Cabinet Meeting today as a result of his visit to China to attend the 11th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Food Security Ministers’ Meeting in Hangzhou, recently.
He said at the same time, cooperation with other countries also needed to be further strengthened to ensure that the regional food supply chain remained strong and stable.
“The ultimate goal remains the same, which is to ensure that the people have enough food, the supply is guaranteed and the country has a more resilient food system to face future challenges,” he said. — Bernama
