GEORGE TOWN, Aug 17 — Penang Hill’s iconic funicular will take a short break from January 4 to 10, 2027 for its scheduled bi annual maintenance, Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) announced today. Service is set to resume on January 11.

Engineers from Swiss manufacturer Garaventa AG will oversee the works, which include repairs to the Lower Station track structure, as well as upgrades to the funicular’s air conditioning system and roof. PHC said the shutdown is part of routine safety checks designed to keep the hill’s century old railway running smoothly.

During the closure, visitors can use the jeep service operated by the Penang Hill Jeep Service Association near the Penang Botanic Gardens Department Office, or take existing hiking routes to the summit.
