TAWAU, Aug 16 — Several improvements to the implementation of the targeted diesel subsidy system are being studied, with the government expected to announce them within the next one to two months, said Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan.
He said the measures include simplifying the application process, relaxing the eligibility criteria for sambung bayar (taking over hire-purchase payments) vehicles, and allowing quotas to be transferred to immediate family members.
“We are still studying several proposals for improvement and, in the next one to two months, we will make an announcement on the improvements, particularly in terms of the process and eligibility,” he said at a press conference after attending the 2027 Budget Engagement Session with industry players here today.
Amir Hamzah said preparations for the 2027 Budget would ensure more effective and comprehensive delivery of assistance to the people under the targeted diesel subsidy.
He said the approach was in line with the government’s intention to ensure that every allocation provided had a tangible impact and helped ease the cost-of-living burden at the grassroots level.
“Through the 2027 Budget Tour series, we are examining various improvements to the targeted diesel subsidy mechanism to ensure that those who are truly eligible can benefit from it optimally,” he said.
On the implementation of the targeted subsidy in Sabah, Amir Hamzah said about 120,000 owners of pickup trucks and jeeps in the state had been identified as eligible to apply for a diesel subsidy quota of more than 300 litres.
However, he said only about 49,000 eligible vehicle owners had registered and submitted their applications so far.
“The government encourages more eligible owners in Sabah to apply immediately, as the facilities and application channels have already been made available,” he said.
To assist those less familiar with technology, Amir Hamzah said the Ministry of Finance had collaborated with the Inland Revenue Board, Urban Transformation Centres and oil companies to provide guidance on applications at counters and petrol stations. — Berrnama
