Johor to add 5,000 smart CCTVs across Greater Johor Bahru in five years

PASIR GUDANG, Aug 13 – The Johor government plans to install 5,000 more smart closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras across Greater Johor Bahru over the next five years to improve public safety, said State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor.

The cameras will be installed across four local authority areas as part of Johor’s push to become a Smart State through greater use of technology.

“We are targeting about 5,000 new smart CCTV cameras next year in the Greater JB region, that includes local authorities from the Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB), Pasir Gudang City Council, Iskandar Puteri City Council and Kulai Municipal Council.

“With the additional smart CCTV cameras, the residents and visitors will feel safer and this increases the overall well-being of the people,” he told reporters after officiating the Johor Smart City Forum 2026 at the Tunku Mahkota Ismail Youth Centre here today.

Mohd Jafni said the Johor government will also install more smart traffic lights in the state, especially in areas with high traffic flow rates such as in city centres and towns.

He said the use of such technology over the past few years have proven to be successful in managing a smooth traffic flow and reducing traffic congestion in an area.

“In addition, the state government will also install more smart street lights throughout the state for convenience,” he said, adding that the respective local authorities or contractors will be immediately notified of any issues with the smart lights where repair work can be carried out faster.

Earlier, Mohd Jafni announced that all 16 local authorities in the state had managed to obtain a rating of at least Level 1 for the Smart City category in the country.

“Most importantly, MBJB is the only local authority in the country to receive a Level 3 rating,” he said.

Johor is officially recognised as Malaysia’s first Smart State, achieving this milestone five years ahead of its 2030 target.

All 16 local authorities in the state have attained a Level 1 Smart City Early Adopter status, with MBJB leading the nation as the first local authority to reach Level 3 – Leading Smart City status.
