KAPIT, June 28 — Once classified as a “dilapidated school”, SK Kampung Baru at Jalan Suhaili here is now completed under Sarawak’s RM1 billion Phase 1 Rebuild of Dilapidated Schools programme and set to officially open this July 8.
The school was previously listed as a “sick project” due to construction delays.
During a visit by Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, he was briefed by JKR Sarawak director Datuk Cassidy Morris that the project, which began in 2020 at a cost of RM12.84 million, was completed with the intervention of a rescue contractor appointed by the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak.
It involved the construction of a four-storey academic block and a four-storey administration block equipped with mechanical and electrical systems. External works included retaining walls, reinforced concrete pedestrian walkways, drainage systems, and perimeter fencing.
The upgraded facility now provides a safer and more conducive learning environment for 258 pupils and 33 teachers.
Abang Johari later toured the completed facilities and expressed appreciation to all parties involved in delivering the project, which forms part of ongoing efforts by the Sarawak and Federal governments to improve educational infrastructure, particularly in rural areas.
Accompanying him were State Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, Sarawak Education Department director Omar Mahli, Kapit Education Officer Jarit Jarmit, SK Kampung Baru headmistress Seniah Othman and school staff. — The Borneo Post
