PUTRAJAYA, June 9 — Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the fallout between PAS and Bersatu was not entirely unexpected, describing it as a development that had been anticipated based on prevailing political trends.
Ahmad Zahid said any form of political cooperation must be built on sincerity, trust and a genuine commitment to nation-building rather than short-term political considerations.
“We anticipated that this development would eventually take place. This is not because we claim to foresee what is destined to happen, but rather because it was a reasonable assessment based on current political developments,” he told reporters after attending Kemas educators’ day celebration programme here today.
Ahmad Zahid said political alliances should not be viewed solely through the lens of electoral advantage, but should instead serve broader national interests.
He added that any cooperation between political parties should be guided by long-term objectives that contribute to national stability and unity.
“Such collaborations must be designed with a long-term vision so that national aspirations can be achieved and social cohesion further strengthened,” he said.
Ahmad Zahid then expressed hope that any steps taken moving forward would not merely stop at the signing of agreements on paper.
What matters more, he said, is sincerity in implementation so that the cooperation can endure and deliver long-term benefits.
