SEBERANG PERAI, June 9 — A four-wheel-drive driver arrested for reckless and dangerous driving has been remanded for four days until June 12 to assist investigations.
Magistrate J. Savinder Singh issued the remand order at the Magistrates’ Court in Bukit Mertajam this morning.
The 29-year-old suspect was brought to the court complex at 8.45am in a police truck.
It was earlier reported that the man was arrested yesterday after allegedly driving recklessly and dangerously while crashing into several vehicles in Seberang Jaya.
In the 10.05am incident, the man, who was driving a Mitsubishi Triton four-wheel drive vehicle, is believed to have acted aggressively before being apprehended by members of the public on the Butterworth–Kulim Expressway (BKE) near a petrol station in Seberang Jaya.
Seberang Perai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Aminuddin Raja Abdullah said police received information about a road incident involving the vehicle before officers were deployed to the scene.
He said initial investigations found that the suspect was believed to have been driving recklessly and dangerously from Sungai Dua towards Penang, crashing into several vehicles along the way.
The suspect was later detained by members of the public on the BKE highway opposite a petrol station in Seberang Jaya before being handed over to police who arrived at the scene.
Nik Aminuddin said upon further inspection, police found substances believed to be drugs in a sling bag the suspect was carrying.
“We found transparent plastic packets with crystal substances believed to be methamphetamine weighing about 0.75 grammes and another packet containing white crystalline substances believed to be ketamine weighing about 2.38 grammes,” he said in a statement last night.
He said urine tests also returned positive for methamphetamine and morphine.
The suspect also has 15 prior drug-related offences and two criminal records.
Police are investigating the case under Section 12(3) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of drugs causing a road accident.
