PUTRAJAYA, June 8 — No Malaysians have been reported affected by the magnitude 7.9 earthquake off the coast of Mindanao in the Philippines at this stage, Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

In a statement, the ministry, commonly known as Wisma Putra, said the Embassy of Malaysia in Manila is closely monitoring the aftermath of the earthquake that struck off the coast of Mindanao at about 7.37am on Monday.

The ministry said the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) has also provided an update on localised tsunami advisories for the coastal areas of Sabah following the incident.

Wisma Putra said the embassy is actively coordinating with the relevant local authorities to ascertain the safety and well-being of Malaysians in the affected areas.

“At this preliminary stage, there have been no reports of Malaysian nationals affected by the disaster,” it said.

Wisma Putra advised Malaysians residing in or travelling to the affected regions in the Philippines to remain vigilant.

“Move to higher ground immediately if located near the coast, and strictly follow all evacuation orders and safety instructions issued by the Philippine authorities,” it said.

To facilitate timely communication and consular assistance, Malaysians are urged to register and regularly update their contact details via the e-Konsular portal at https://ekonsular.kln.gov.my.

For immediate consular assistance or emergencies, Malaysians may contact the Embassy of Malaysia in Manila directly through the following channels: Telephone (general enquiries): +63 2 8662 8200, Emergency Helpline (after office hours): +63 961 077 8113 or email: [email protected].

Wisma Putra said it would continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as verified information becomes available. — Bernama
